RIP Michael Turner(April 21, 1971 – June 27, 2008)

Comic book artist Michael Turner passed away after a nearly 8 year fight with cancer. He was only 37...

From Matt Brady at Newsorama:
"Turner was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma (a bone-based cancer that attacks the cartilage) in March of 2000, which ultimately cost him his right hip, a portion of his pelvis and several pounds of bone.Turner was very open about his cancer, making convention appearances throughout the entire time, and never giving in to the illness."

The amazing thing is that he remained a very prolific artist during this time. While working on his creator owned Fathom, Soulfire, and Ekos he was also doing work for Marvel and DC.I personally never met the man( I missed my chance when he did a signing at Universe of Superheroes), but from everything I read he seemed like a genuinely great guy, especially with his fans. Turner is arguably one of the most influential artists of the 90's along with Jim Lee and Mark Silvestri.

Check out Turner's Aspen Comics.

Comics&Classics July Featured Artist: Rob Jones

Photobucket

"The Girls of Summer" will kick off Saturday night July 5th. Rob has a very polished, clean style to his drawings and character design. I'm a huge fan of pin-up and good girl art and am looking forward to the opening. Check out the Comics and Classics link to the right for more info.

Here's a little more about Rob from the Alpha Cat website:

"Rob is the creator, co-writer and artist on Perfect Storm. He been working in comics for 7 years as a penciler, inker, colorist, writer and letterer for companies like Heroic Publishing, Students of the Unusual, and MoonStone Books. For the past 5 years, Rob has been an assistant to industry veteran Dick Giordano, and together they have produced work for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Top Cow Comics, and Egmont Publishing.
Rob serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Alpha Cat Comics."

The Neverending Mural...

The mural keeps growing! We still have 10-12 more pieces to do before the project is done. My helmet and hammerhead are 99% finished! The shark on the right is about 70% finished. There will also be some waves as a backround and a banner with "LANDSHARK" in old style text. I am glad we weren't given a deadline, we keep coming up with more images to paint. Its a blast, but very time consuming. In non-mural news, we have some cool group shows in the works for August. Check back for details...

Landshark Mural Progress part 2...

Saturday night at the Shark painting murals...A good productive night of work. Not too many people hanging out. The local denizens can get a little rowdy... like the impromptu game of "spin the bottle" the other night...

6/18 Shyloh sketches...

Now that I have a some down time (kinda), I am back to doing some daily sketches like I originally planned for this blog. Heres a couple characters from the Shyloh comic. I think once I get some stories penned and ready to go, I am going to use a sketchier, looser style. The drawings seem to have a bit more energy and movement.

The Godfather of Gore!

Happy birthday to one of my cinematic heroes: Herschell Gordon Lewis!

"Herschell Gordon Lewis is the man who put red meat into the American cinematic diet. Ultimately Herschell made Quentin Tarantino possible." - Joe Briggs

From his site:
"The incredibly popular, violent horror films of recent decades, such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday The 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, owe much of their existence to the undisputed Godfather of Gore - Herschell Gordon Lewis. In 1963 Lewis, with his monumental splatter movie Blood Feast, single-handedly changed the face of horror cinema forever. As well as virtually inventing the gore generation, Lewis also produced a number of "exploitation" movies, as well as sampling the full gamut of exploitation subjects ranging from wife-swapping and ESP to rock 'n' roll and LSD. A Taste of Blood details all these, plus gore classics such as 2,000 Maniacs, The Gore Gore Girls, Color Me Blood Red and Wizard of Gore, placing them in context amid the roots and development of the exploitation film."

Horror movie fans who are not familiar with arguably one of the most influential directors of the genre, check out Blood Feast and 2000 Maniacs. What a treat!

The Next Project...

Next on the list of projects: Murals for the NEW Landshark Cafe. The Shark has a special place in my heart. I have eaten many a shrimp taco, consumed gallons of PBR, watched and performed great rock shows. I have also had the privilege of co-hosting with Bo D. 3 art and music shows from 2007-2008(We plan on a fourth in the near future). Shark owner Corey Fox has let Bo and I have pretty much free reign with what we put on the walls. Pirate/Sailor Jerry/tattoo is the theme agreed upon by all parties. I started tonight with a 3 foot glass of 5 cent beer. I got the outline and painted gesso as a ground. The coloring starts tommorow night. We have lots of cool imagery (sharks, devils, and pirate ships to name a few) in the works and I will do my best to document the progress.
