12/29 Daily Sketch: Arkista's Ring

Today's sketch is the NES game Arkista's Ring. Its pretty much a Legend Of Zelda clone. The game is linear with repeating levels rather than a free roaming world like Zelda. Kinda stiff on the control. Very repetitive and not really that fun. Grab the original Legend of Zelda for a true NES classic!

SOLD!

Found out I sold this piece via e-mail. The new owner Mr. Dan Grove has a fantastic collection of art that is featured on his site: greendragonsden.com. Thanks to Dan for the purchase and thanks to Bear and Bird Gallery for letting me put my crap there :)

12-27 Daily Sketch: Zombie Nation!

Today's NES inspired daily sketch is a weird one... Zombie Nation! Get this... You play a giant floating samurai head shooting eyeballs and barfing on buildings, little soldiers and planes and random shit... Here's the best synopsis I could find...

From wikipedia:

The plot of Zombie Nation takes place in 1999, when a meteor known as "Darc Seed" crashes in the Nevada desert. Darc Seed then shoots magnetic rays and turns the people of the United States into zombies. Darc Seed also brings the Statue of Liberty to life to follow its commands. The magnetic rays also allows Darc Seed to control many deadly weapons, including the most powerful weapon of all - the legendary samurai sword Shura. The head of the samurai, Namakubi hears of Shura falling into Darc Seed's clutches. He then heads to the United States to destroy Darc Seed, free the American people from the looming zombification, and reclaim
the samurai sword Shura..."

Pretty f'n strange game. I didn't really notice any zombies per se... You fight a reclining alien and the statue of liberty, but no zombies... If you like side scrolling shooters, you might get a kick out of this one. Its pretty easy to find a ROM for this online. Check it out, its a weird one.

12/26 Daily sketch: Blaster Master!

Quick sketch I did on Christmas of one of my all time NES faves: Blaster Master! A sweet tale about a boy and his frog. Frog hops into a pit, dude follows frog, dude finds sweet tank named Sophia and the ass kicking commences! The no continues made this game pretty f'n hard in 1989! Emulate and freeze helped me finally beat this game!

12/20 Daily Sketch... The Guardian Legend!

Today's daily sketch is of the Guardian from The Guardian Legend for the NES. A hot robot chick that turns into a spaceship? Hell yeah! Gotta love the 8 bit era! It was one of the early NES games that attempted to combine two different genres. In this case: overhead shooter and action adventure. While not well received upon release, it now has a cult following and has received credit as an influential multi-genre game. If suck at shooters, like I do, that first level is a bitch! The action adventure parts are easy yet repetitive. Not a perfect game, but definitely worth checkin' out.

SOLD!

Sold these guys in November at Bogda, The Sinclair and Bear and Bird...

12/18 Daily Sketch... Ninja Spirit

Today I have a very rough sketch based on Ninja Spirit for the TG-16. OLD school... If you haven't played NS, its very similar to the NES Ninja Gaiden series. Not quite as fast, but pretty frantic. Your guy is a bit slow, but you get a couple ghost ninjas and your a badass... Except when you die when a bad guy bumps into you. To be fair, they have a mode where you have a life bar... Not as good as gaiden, but better than Sega's Shinobi... I think anyway... Ninja Gaiden even used Ninja Spirit's ghost ninja gimmick later on in the series...

12/15 daily sketch...Power Blade!

Today's daily sketch is from the NES classic: Nova from Power Blade! You play a guy with crazy boomerangs that looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in sweatpants... Gotta love the early 90's! This game was overshadowed by the popular Mega Man series. They share many similar elements. Some people think its as good... I'm not so sure... The graphics and gameplay are pretty solid, but its no Mega Man and definitely did not have the challenge. It's a good one for the collection and I would recommend emulating it and give it a shot!

12-14 Daily Sketch... Monster Party!

Ain't no party like a Monster Party, cuz the Monster Party don't stop!
Today's daily sketch is of Mark and Bert from Monster Party for the NES. Monster Party originally came out in 1989... Holy shit that was 20 years ago! It's an ok game looking back, but at the time it was so crazy and weird. It was also surprisingly gory for an 8-bit game. Its no Abadox, but its surprising it made it to the U.S. despite Nintendo USA's censorship during that time. Definitely going to a series of Monster Party paintings in 2010!

12/13 sketch... Brad Fang!

Today's daily sketch is a character from the hard as balls Genesis game: Contra:Hard Corps. Brad Fang is a werewolf cyborg thing...or something like that I guess. Love the game, relentless and aggravating as it is!
